Nutrition
Adequate nutrition is a vital part of spine health. Proper nutrition and hydration play a vital role in the body’s ability to repair damage from inflammation. Inadequate levels of vitamin D are now known to play a role in chronic pain patients. Some studies have even showen that when using vitamin D supplementation, pain levels in patients have decreased. Vitamins A, C, and K are important as well in maintaining a healthy spine. People with poor nutrition have a higher risk of spine injuries and are at increased risk for osteoporosis, which also places the patient at a higher risk for vertebral fractures. Calcium intake is important, as it is a major factor for building bone density. Vitamin D is needed for proper calcium absorption and to strengthen the collagen. Smoking cessation is important as well as proper hydration for a healthy spine.
