Michael W. Hasz, M.D., M.B.A., F.A.C.S.

Prior to joining Virginia Spine Institute in 1995, Dr. Hasz served as a Major in the United States Air Force. During his tenure, he was Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Director of Spinal Surgery at the Andrews Air Force Base/Malcolm Grow Medical Center. He currently holds an appointment as Clinical Instructor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services Health Science University in Bethesda, Maryland. As a nationally recognized spinal specialist, Dr. Hasz was named among the top 1% of physicians in his specialty by U.S. News & World Report.
For the last decade, Dr. Hasz has been providing minimally invasive surgical treatment for his patients. His minimally invasive practice includes the use of novel robot-guidance, endoscopy, and laser techniques. Furthermore he uses advanced technologies in artificial disc replacement. In addition to state-of-the-art skilled treatment options, he values the holistic approach to treating his patients. His passion is in educating patients in human performance, nutrition, and exercise in order to improve their overall quality of life.
His dedication to advancing spinal health care has him actively participating in clinical trials and studies. He was one of the first in the region to use the MetRx MIS system for lumbar and cervical surgery, the DLIF/XLIF approach for spinal fusion and deformity work, the Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty procedures for spinal fractures, the IDET procedure for low back pain, and the ProDisc artificial disc. He is pioneering minimally invasive surgery techniques for the treatment of sacroiliac joint dysfunction. He works with athletes and weekend warriors to get them back to their active lifestyles as quickly and safely as possible.
Dr. Hasz oversees clinical trials investigating minimally invasive surgical techniques and currently serves as Principal Investigator for SI joint fusion clinical trials. He performs stem cell therapy for disc degeneration by harvesting the patient's own adult stem cells from their bone marrow. His latest advances also include biologic agents to promote spinal fusion. Dr. Hasz travels internationally to train fellow spine surgeons on the latest minimally invasive techniques.
Dr. Hasz is a pilot, holding commercial and instrument ratings for airplanes and float planes. He has built his own airplane and he recently added his helicopter rating to his flying resume. Additionally he continues to pursue athletic interests including skiing, trapeze, skydiving, Crossfit (Level 1 Certified Trainer), and Yoga (RYT 200 Yoga Instructor).
