Patient Stories

Given a gift…

I have had severe scoliosis for as long as I can remember. Simply standing upright was accompanied by severe pain. Since having surgery, I have improved both physically and mentally. I feel as though I have a whole new, wonderful life ahead of me and have truly been given a gift. The team at the VSI has been fantastic.

Time well spent…
I would like to express my deepest appreciation to you and your entire spinal surgery team at Reston Hospital Center for the outstanding medical care you have provided. For the three days which I spent in the hospital, I felt as if I were being taken care of by my own family. I am now back to work and taking part in my daughter’s life again. I would have never thought it possible.

Different than other places…
I had been referred to the Virginia Spine Institute for treatment of my back pain. I have suffered for nearly five years despite anti-inflammatories, therapy, and cortisone injections. Dr. Hasz really took the time to listen to me and help figure out the problem. I am with a new physical therapy group and have been treated with a series is facet injections. I am able to move and bend much better than the past few years. I am not cured yet, but am very excited about the progress so far.

If it weren’t for Dr. Schuler…
If it weren’t for Dr. Schuler, I doubt that my mother would be walking today. She is 73 years old and was having progressive problems with back pain and walking. Her back had always bothered her, but her legs started getting heavy and weak. Dr. Schuler diagnosed arthritis and spinal stenosis pinching the nerves to the legs. He used the new BMP material to help her spine fuse. She is doing great.

My neck was killing me…
My neck was killing me until I became a patient at the Virginia Spine Institute. The staff did an excellent job in making me feel at home. After I discussed my problem with the doctors, they tried everything to avoid surgery. I really appreciated that. I did not want someone to simply tell me that I needed surgery, I wanted someone to help me. Even if I eventually need surgery, I feel confident that my doctors have done a good job. Thank you.

I had to sit in a chair…
I had to sit in a chair most of the time because of my pain. I have always been healthy and athletic, but the pain was so bad that I could not function. The other doctors kept saying that the MRI was normal and there was nothing that they could do about my arm pain. I was told to see a pain specialist. Dr. Subach showed me the problem on my MRI , it was a small disc bulge/ bone spur pinching the nerves. When it came time for surgery, I knew that I had made the right decision in driving all the way to North Virginia. Thanks, doc.

I don’t know how we were so lucky!...
Our family would like to thank you for all of your efforts over the past several months regarding our mother. She had developed back pain and went from a cane to a walker to a wheelchair in a period of weeks. It was obvious that physical therapy was not helping her. We have been very pleased with her care from the first time in the office. Surgery was a difficult time for all of us. I don’t know how we were so lucky in finding the doctors at The Virginia Spine Institute.

Finally, no pain…
Over the decades, I had acupuncture, chiropractic adjustments, massage, meditation and drugs. I exercised faithfully, walked four miles a day, took glucosamine condroiton, wore a brace, lost weight, saw a lot of doctors and hired a personal trainer. I never thought that I would actually be able to function and live pain free. When I finally decided on surgery, the doctors at VSI had a conference about my case and figured out the best approach. After the recovery, I am doing great. Finally, no pain.

Breaking my spine…
As a young, active woman the possibility of breaking my spine would never have occurred to me. When I was visiting family in Washington, D.C. , I was involved in a car wreck. I had a fracture of my T12 vertebrae that required a fusion surgery. Although the surgery was painful, the doctors and PAs, especially Renee, were really great. I am so glad that the Virginia Spine Institute was there for me.

An athlete all my life…
I’m a 68-year-old man who had suffered from sciatica pain in my hip and leg. I have been an athlete all my life and was concerned that surgery might help the pain but might also keep me from being as active as I wanted to be. Dr. Subach used a minimally invasive surgery to remove the piece of ruptured disc that was causing the trouble. That was three weeks ago and I am now able to walk two miles a day.
