"I often lead my battalion on 4 mile runs, play flag football & conduct Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training with my soldiers" Lt. Colonel Melito National Hero

WE SALUTE OUR SPINES OF SERVICE: LT. COLONEL MELITO’S TRUE STORY

Lieutenant Colonel Melito is Commander, 5th Battalion, 5th Air Defense Artillery Regiment and served two tours in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  Lt. Col. Melito suffered injuries when his Bradley fighting vehicle was involved in a collision in the line of duty in Iraq.  Following the injury, his MRI showed significant degeneration in his lower back of both the L4/5 and L5/S1 disc spaces.  He had hoped to avoid surgery, but he was frustrated by significant pain which impacted his ability to perform activities involved in both his military career and personal life.

Treatment:

Anterior and posterior fusion of the lower lumbar spine, including placement of fixation screws at L4 – S1 in June 2008. Instrumentation removal in May 2009.

Today:

Lt. Col. Melito remains on active duty, often leading his battalion on 4 mile runs and conducts Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training with his soldiers regularly.
