I was in pain for about eight months before I was blessed to meet, Dr. Schuler whom I first learned about through a friend whose husband had been successfully treated by him. I was unable to walk or stand for more than ten minutes without pain and having to sit down. It interfered with my daily activities, including preparing meals. Thanks to the care of, Dr. Schuler and the VSI team I was able to resume my daily activities and more!
I had undergone surgery at a different facility in Fairfax in 2011, but developed worsening symptoms only a few years later. By 2013 I had developed pseudarthrosis and adjacent segment breakdown -- my L2/3 level was completely collapsed with a large disc herniation creating severe spinal stenosis. Dr. Schuler determined the instability in my spine required surgical correction. He performed an Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF) and a Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF). With the excellent follow up care and physical therapy prescribed I was not only able to resume my family responsibilities and again enjoy my hobbies, I was also able to care for my husband after HIS successful spinal surgery with Dr. Schuler in December 2013! In addition to my existing hobbies of cross stitch, ancestry research and reading, I am able to enjoy social activities with friends once again. I have even developed a new hobby – baking gifts for friends.
How do I feel after my surgery? AMAZING!!! I am filled with gratitude for the care of everyone at Virginia Spine Institute, Virginia Therapy and Fitness Center, and the on-going work of the Spinal Research Foundation (SRF). In May of 2014 I participated in my first SRF We’ve Got Your Back Race 5K and again in May of 2015…what glorious steps forward for me.
My experience at VSI has been nothing short of wonderful. I cheerfully recommend VSI to anyone I encounter who is or may be in need of spinal care. Those under the VSI umbrella have become like treasured friends and family to me. I thank God for guiding me to them.
