TRUE STORY: OFFICER PETER M. EXPERIENCED BACK PAIN FOR YEARS; AFTER TWO SURGERIES, HE IS BACK TO FULL TIME DUTY!
While Officer Masood experienced low back pain intermittently for a number of years, he was never kept from his work as a K-9 police officer until he experienced a fall that caused pain and numbness in his leg and progressive loss of strength. His MRI revealed a large disc herniation arising from the disc space between L4 and L5 as well as changes in the bones surrounding the L4/5 disc space. Days later he was scheduled for surgery.
Officer Masood underwent a lumbar microdiscectomy, which resolved his leg symptoms, but he was still bothered by back pain. He did well with aggressive rehabilitation until he experienced a recurrent disc herniation at the same L4/5 level. He then underwent a fusion, physical therapy, and eventually had the screws that were place in his back, removed.
Two years after his initial surgery, Officer Masood had no back pain and only a small amount of numbness in his right toes. He returned to full time duty and back to the life he loves.
