"Seek advice. Explore your options. Strive for improving your quality of life!" Sue R.

My story began 10 years ago with what I considered as pain in my right leg. When I went to my primary care physician, they said, "You know you have a bad back, right?" Well, no, I didn't! My right leg had tingles and numbness. So, they referred me to Virginia Spine Institute.

I spent the next 10 years using pain medications and exhausting a variety of therapies including chiropractic care, acupuncture, physical therapy, Pilates, injections, exercise, etc. My activity level decreased, but my desire to continue an active life continued. Finally, I was tired of what I called "band aid" treatments. Was there anything that would make a bigger difference?

I returned to Virginia Spine Institute and consulted with my doctor, Dr. Subach. He helped me to seek further treatment with his associate, Dr. Good. Together we decided that surgery was the solution to make the changes necessary to improve my quality of life. In April 2013, I had scoliosis reconstruction surgery (Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion, ALIF) from T10-S1 to correct degenerative scoliosis which straighten my spine and replaced a couple of deteriorating discs.

One year later, I am doing so much better. I do not have to take pain medications on a daily basis. My energy is back; my life renewed. Of course, there are also limitations to my "new back"...but these are far outweighed by the benefits. This was so great that I decided to also have a total knee replacement within the year. For my birthday, I bought a new bicycle! Amazing! On May 17, 2014, I was able to walk in the "We've Got Your Back" fun run/walk. This would have been impossible in the past.

I also highly recommend the physical therapy services at Virginia Therapy & Fitness Center which is located on the same floor as the Virginia Spine Institute. They provide hands-on therapy and direct service to their patients. A wonderful practice!

When asked what advice I would you give someone that is suffering from back and/or neck pain, I answered:

Seek advice. Explore your options. Strive for improving your quality of life!
