Holistic Treatment Options For Arthritis

Authored by: VSI

While there is currently no cure for arthritis, there are several treatment options that afford patients the ability to lead a normal, pain-free life. One such treatment utilizes the holistic properties of natural medicines. These supplements are backed by science through well-designed clinical trials and are shown to be effective in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and arthritis-related conditions.

Five Natural Supplements for Arthritis Pain

CAPSAICIN

Capsaicin temporarily reduces the pain transmitter, substance P.  It’s pain relieving properties have been cited in several academic studies and some even report a 50% reduction in joint pain after three weeks of use. Capsaicin is typically found in chili peppers and is converted into prescription creams and gels. It is best used for osteoarthritis but is also used for rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia.

TUMERIC/CURCUMIN

Curcumin is the chemical in turmeric that reduces joint pain and swelling by blocking inflammatory cytokines and enzymes.  One clinical study showed that turmeric used in tandem with a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug {i.e. Voltaren} showed long-term improvement in pain with those suffering from osteoarthritis.  Curcumin is best for osteoarthritis but can also be used for rheumatoid arthritis.

AVOCADO SOYBEAN UNSAPONIFIABLES {ASU}

Avocado Soybean Unsaponifiables is a natural vegetable extract made from one-third avocado and two-thirds soybean oil. ASU blocks pro-inflammatory chemicals, prevents the deterioration of synovial cells that line the joints, and may help to regenerate connective tissue. It can be found in pill form and is best for osteoarthritis.

CAT’S CLAW {UNCARIA TOMENTOSA}

Cat’s Claw is part of a bark and root of a vine that grows in parts of South and Central America. It serves as an anti-inflammatory that inhibits tumor necrosis factor, the aim of most powerful rheumatoid arthritis medicines. It may also benefit the immune system. Cat’s Claw can be found in pill form or as an oil, but it is best to find a brand free of tetra-cyclic oxindole alkaloids.

FISH OIL

Fish Oil capsules contain the omega-3 fatty acids DHA {docosahexaenoic acid} and EPA {eicosapentaenoic acid} which can reduce inflammation that causes swelling and pain. Studies have shown that fish oil significantly decrease joint tenderness and stiffness in rheumatoid arthritis patients and may reduce or eliminate non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications.
