Top 3 Yoga Poses For Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a unique condition that affects approximately seven million people in the United States. The abnormal curvature of the spine may lead to, difficulty in breathing, physical disfigurement, immense pain, and possible progression of the curve.

Yoga, as a form of physical exercise, involves postures or “asanas”, controlled breathing and mindful awareness. It combines the development of the mind, body and spirit and is widely practiced as a way of living with an overarching goal for a healthful mind and body.

While it cannot reverse the effects of scoliosis, scoliosis patients have found that yoga can help strengthen core muscles that support the spine and in some cases decrease their pain and discomfort. If you have been diagnosed with scoliosis, trying these 3 poses can strengthen and stretch your muscles, as well as improve your breathing awareness.

1. MOUNTAIN POSE FOR SCOLIOSIS
  • This pose helps with balance, core strength, and posture.
  • It requires you to stand tall and steady, like a mountain.
2. TREE POSE FOR SCOLIOSIS
  • Tree Pose helps with posture, as well as stretching and lengthening your spine.
  • You can stand with your back against a wall if you feel unsteady in this pose.
3. MODIFIED CHILD’S POSE FOR SCOLIOSIS
  • With the extended version – your arms will be out in front of you, instead of by your side.
  • This pose helps with stretching your hips, lengthening your spine, and increases breathing awareness.
