The Do’s And Don’ts Of Protecting Yourself From COVID-19

Authored by Dr. Thomas Schuler, MD, FACS, FAAOS. April 9, 2020

The use of proper protective gear can help protect us from infection. Three of the most important things we can do to stop the spread of the COVID virus is:

  1.  Keep your hands clean – it is critical during this time to remember to keep your hands clean before touching your face or any item that will touch your face (like a cell phone)
  2. Avoid touching your face and clean any item that may come in contact with your face
  3. Maintain appropriate social distance – the perfect social distance is to quarantine at home because if everyone in your house is healthy, then there’s no virus there

Practicing good techniques to avoid getting infected is critical, but the other important part is protecting our immune system and natural defenses.

  1. Avoid all nicotine products – including vaping
  2. Exercise 30-60 minutes each day
  3. Get enough sleep
  4. Take vitamins daily, balanced with proper nutrition
  5. Keep hands clean and moisturized
  6. Avoid alcohol
  7. Minimize stress

There are so many things we can do to help ourselves, and the most important things to keep in mind are to be clean, remain healthy, and be happy.
