Iontophoresis is the method of facilitating the transfer of ions by electrical potential into soft tissues for therapeutic purposes. Iontophoresis is a modality for drug delivery in certain conditions. This type of therapy can be administered by a physical therapist and is a fast way of achieving rapid resolution of inflammation. Iontophoresis introduces medications to the specific site of injury. The affected area is placed into water, while a current of electricity is passed through the water. The electrical current is then increased gradually until the person feels a tingling sensation.
Inflammatory conditions such as tendonitis, sprains and bursitis are often treated using iontophoresis. Steroids such as dexamethasone are often administered using iontophoresis in these disorders. This procedure is relatively safe and painless and is performed by a certified physical therapist. It usually requires three to five treatments.
