A leader in physical therapy in the Washington Metropolitan area, Virginia Therapy & Fitness Center has unleashed the power of technology to provide lasting, effective results for our patients. We are proud to offer Class IV Laser Therapy as the latest advancement for the reduction of acute and chronic pain and inflammation.
WHAT IS LASER THERAPY?
Laser therapy is a proven, non-invasive technique that applies a therapeutic dose of light to injured or dysfunctional tissue. The class VI laser energy creates a cellular response that leads to reduced pain and inflammation and faster healing for musculoskeletal conditions. This lasting pain relief treatment has been cleared by the FDA since 2003 and offers a safe alternative to medicine and surgery.
Harness the power of laser therapy!
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LASER THERAPY?
- Pain relief
- Decreased inflammation
- Acceleration of tissue repair and wound healing
- Improved nerve conduction
- Waste removal from damaged tissue
- Deliverance of important healing agents
As physical therapists, our goal is to reduce inflammation as quickly as possible so that the body’s natural healing process can begin. This allows us to begin restoring range of motion and normal function of the body. Laser therapy accomplishes this goal by quickly working to reduce pain and inflammation through the activation of a chemical in the body called nitric oxide. Nitric oxide dilates blood vessels in the body which improves circulation in the damaged tissue, delivering oxygen, vital sugars, proteins, and salts while removing wastes.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Quick biology lesson: ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is a high-energy molecule that gives us the energy to do just about everything. Laser Therapy triggers a series of mechanisms in the body that activates these ATP cells in a process known as photobiomodulation. This stimulates cellular metabolism which accelerates the body’s healing process.
WHAT CONDITIONS DOES IT TREAT?
Due to its non-invasive nature, laser therapy is often used as a powerful complement to existing physical therapy treatments. It can be used before, during, or after surgical procedures and in conjunction with rehabilitation programs. Laser therapy is a versatile tool that can be used to treat many common conditions including, but not limited to:
- Acute and Chronic Pain
- Sprains, Strains, & Fractures
- Sports Medicine
- Rotator Cuff Injuries
- Post Surgical Pain Relief
- Orthopedic Disorders
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Plantar Fasciitis
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING TREATMENT?
Laser therapy treatments last between 5-10 minutes depending on the condition being treated and are administered directly to the skin as the laser light cannot penetrate layers of clothing. Patients experience a warm, therapeutic sensation and a reduction in pain immediately following treatment, allowing them to better perform their physical therapy exercises. Athletes also find that they will recover faster between sporting events.
WHEN WILL I FEEL BETTER? DOES IT HURT?
Pain relief is often immediate and can last for several hours after a therapy session. Five to six treatments are recommended in conjunction with your physical therapy regimen. The application is painless and patients will only experience a warm sensation resulting from the activation of the body’s cells. The laser itself is not hot.
