Prolotherapy : Quick Facts
- Prolotherapy, also called proliferation therapy or regenerative injection therapy, is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a dextrose (sugar) solution to stimulate the body’s natural healing response in injured ligaments, tendons, and other connective tissues.
- Prolotherapy is commonly used to treat chronic joint pain, ligament instability, tendon injuries, sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction, whiplash, arthritis, plantar fasciitis, and other musculoskeletal conditions that have not improved with conservative care.
- During the procedure, a physician injects the solution into the affected area to promote tissue repair, strengthen weakened connective tissue, and improve joint stability. Treatment is performed in the office and typically does not require anesthesia or a lengthy recovery.
- Many patients require a series of treatments to achieve the best results, with the number of injections depending on the condition being treated and the body’s response to therapy.
- Prolotherapy is often combined with physical therapy, regenerative medicine, and other nonsurgical treatments as part of a comprehensive treatment plan designed to improve pain, function, and mobility.
- A thorough evaluation by a musculoskeletal or spine specialist is recommended to determine whether prolotherapy is appropriate based on the patient’s diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment goals.
