VIA Disc NP: Quick Facts
- VIA Disc NP® is a minimally invasive, nonsurgical injection designed to supplement tissue loss within degenerated lumbar spinal discs using donated nucleus pulposus (disc) tissue. It is intended to help restore the disc’s natural cushioning function.
- VIA Disc NP® is used to treat discogenic low back pain caused by degenerative disc disease, particularly in patients who have not experienced lasting relief with conservative treatments such as physical therapy, medications, or spinal injections.
- The procedure is performed using fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance to inject the allograft into the affected disc through a small needle. It is an outpatient procedure that does not require open surgery and involves minimal recovery time.
- Common symptoms of discogenic pain include chronic low back pain, difficulty bending, sitting, driving, coughing, sneezing, or performing everyday activities due to degeneration of the spinal discs.
- Candidates are evaluated through a comprehensive spine examination, imaging studies, and, in some cases, additional diagnostic testing to confirm that degenerative disc disease is the primary source of pain.
- VIA Disc NP® is often incorporated into a comprehensive regenerative treatment plan and has demonstrated improvements in pain and function for appropriately selected patients, with clinical studies reporting benefits lasting up to 24 months after treatment.
Currently the only practice in Virginia offering VIA Disc NP
VIA Disc NP is the first and only nucleus pulposus allograft (disc-like substance) intended to support the cushioning function of the intervertebral disc. The VIA Disc NP procedure is non-surgical and performed as an injection. The injection of VIA Disc NP is intended to supplement a patient’s tissue loss due to disc degeneration and is most effective when combined with other Regenerative Medicine treatments, such as Stem Cell Therapy or Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP).
What is VIA Disc NP?

As we age, we lose the cushioning material in our spinal discs – this condition is called degenerative disc disease and is very common. As a result of less cushioning between our discs, we can develop back pain. VIA Disc NP is a minimally invasive injection that can help slow degeneration in your discs and potentially postpone or avoid a large surgery.
Via Disc NP supplements tissue loss from disc degeneration and has shown lasting results 24 months out significantly reducing low back pain while also improving function.
What does VIA Disc NP treat?
VIA Disc NP is designed to treat discogenic low back pain caused by degenerative disc disease. We diagnose degenerative disc disease during your evaluation through a combination of symptoms, physical examination, and imaging.
With degenerative disc disease, pain typically manifests as low back pain, sometimes coupled with radiating pain, numbness or tingling into your leg.
Patients often describe discogenic low back pain as aching, dull, or gnawing and experience difficulty performing daily functions such as driving, bending over to tie shoes, coughing, sneezing, or straining to have a bowel movement.
